The most common reason why people decide to make the change and get fit is because they want to lose weight. Whether it be for their health or appearance (or both), there are plenty of people out there who head to the gym every day because they are trying to lose some of their unwanted body fat.
So why is the success rate so low? Why is it that people find it so difficult to shred fat?
Is it to do with
- Fad diets?
- Lack of nutrition and training knowledge?
- Our addiction to fast food?
- Is it to do with rationalising our actions, because everyone else around us is eating pizza, drinking fizz, and sitting down to watch TV after work?
The answer to all of the above is YES... but they are not the main focus of todays blog.
( In fact, it has almost become the norm to sit down on a Saturday night and order in a pizza. The UK's "Ant and Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway" almost PLANTS this idea into your head, along with the rest of todays media. )
The truth is that we as humans have a problem with our perception of time, specifically our perception of our present actions and their effects on the future.
So yes, you may want to eat that pizza right now, and if you ate it ... so what? You would not see that extra 3 - 5 pounds of fat immediately appear on your body. But if you did, I'm pretty sure that you'd have made a different choice right?
To conclude, you need to clearly understand the consequences of your actions, even if they don't appear immediately. So before you put that pizza in your mouth, think about what implications this may have on your fat loss journey. It may cause a disruption in your diet, but ultimately you are likely not reach your goal in the desired time.
( Another example of this behaviour is with smokers. They figure that they won’t have to deal with the consequences of their smoking until they're much older. )
So this is why realistic goal setting, training, and nutrition programming is so essential in order for you to stay on track and focused every day.
In order to feel that fast food satisfaction, some chose to incorporate a "cheat meal" into their training plan which acts as a reward for their hard work and gives them something to look forward to. This is fine! As long as your cheat meals are taken into consideration and are relevant to your training then it's okay to cheat very occasionally ;D. You're only human! Fast food has all kinds of unhealthy chemicals added to it which are designed to make it taste DELICIOUS so do not beat yourself up for wanting some.
